If you drove up the A697 in 1963 you’d have seen a small-holding a couple of miles north of Morpeth – nothing remarkable; just a house, a shed and a field or two.
Drive up the same stretch of road today, and the difference is astounding. On the same site as those original chickens and cabbage plants now stands 50,000 m² of covered retail space and growing space – a 40 acre site in total.
The Lishman Family, owners since those early days, have presided over these huge changes and all the steps in-between, to steer Heighley Gate towards its coveted ‘Garden Centre of Excellence’ status.
The photographs below show how we've evolved over the years, these were taken, in order, in 1963, 1967, 1973, 1981, 1986, 1995, 1999 and 2003 and really show how the centre has expanded over the years.
